The elderly should exercise more
Go for a walk
“The body is a fresh product and it perishes if it’s not used”, says Professor Astrid Bergland at Oslo University College in an article at the website forskning.no, which recommends older people to exercise more. It prevents a number of ailments and diseases, and may even benefit social and mental health. Through exercise we release endorphins, which gives us a sense of joy, well-being and additional energy.
How do you get started?
Everyone has different needs, and we are motivated by different things. It is therefore important to find the motivation that will help you to complete your workout. TOPRO, however, has some tips that may help you well on your way:
- Start easily: the “door sill mile” can often be the longest one. Therefore, start easily. Training in your own home is fully possible. See below for a link to a guide from the Norwegian Directorate of Health, which shows you strength exercises that can be done at home.
- Get out to into fresh air: If you’re legs are causing you pain, you can bring a cane or rollator with you.
- Daily tasks are useful: Cleaning and collecting the newspaper are also important in order to stay in shape.
